This Thursday, we met virtually with Dr. Jason Unrine to review our lead levels taken from samples around campus. Lead levels are a concern due to the heavy use of these heavy metals in paint, water pipes, utensils, etc with levels being especially concerning in Kentucky and the North-East USA. We took samples from randomized spots around campus and began the process of drying our samples. After drying, the contents were analyzed via mass spectrometer for heavy metal content. This is the third cohort of samples that the SURES program has assisted in collecting. Our levels are within the accepted levels for Kentucky, which are still quite high in comparison to the rest of the USA. Our results have increased interest in analyzing various sample regions including near roads, around different building types, and through different levels of foot-traffic.
